Dr. Janice Annis received her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2008 and a bachelor's degree in Animal Science in 1998, both from Virginia Tech. She has worked in veterinary hospitals in the Roanoke area, the New River Valley, Norfolk and Virginia Beach. Her special interests include small dogs, cats, and exotic companion mammals, which is to say, almost any pet with fur. Dr. Annis also enjoys soft tissue surgery, dental surgery, pain management, and geriatric pet care. One of her favorite jobs was working closely with a colony of baboons, long-tailed macaques and Rhesus monkeys.
Although Dr. Annis loves her patients, she is also passionate about pet owners. "Honesty, kindness and compassionate care of pets and people is central to everything I do."
In her spare time, Dr. Annis works and volunteers with a number of rescue animal organizations, but the Roanoke Valley SPCA is especially dear to her heart. The Annises are often fostering "special needs" pets, bringing them home from the shelter or pound until they are healthy enough to be adopted.
Dr. Annis lives in Christiansburg with her husband Jason and their menagerie of pets, lovingly referred to as "The Annis Zoo." They love kids and have recently adopted three boys (4, 7 and 10 years old). They also share their home with dogs, cats, a rabbit, a guinea pig, and a pet rat. In the past, other animals including ferrets, a chinchilla, a gerbil, and mice have been a part of their family. The Annises are members of Belmont Christian Church and remain active in the community. When they get a chance to relax, they enjoy watching movies, reading, hiking, doing puzzles, and working on home projects. Given the chance, they like to travel, especially when it offers opportunities to learn about the history of the different regions across the country.
